The key concept in breaking news is partnership. We maintain coverage of our newsroom email and phone throughout the day, and as your reporters collect and produce your news they make regular checks online and by phone. The fastest way to get us moving on a breaking story is to give us a head-up call or email. Something as simple as "a plane just fell from the sky" is enough.

Example: KXBT/Austin (9/28/2010)
UT-Austin Student Fires Several Shots on Campus Before Taking His Own Life in Library Stairwell

The UT Shooter story was the first  time we’ve dealt with VirtualNewsCenter in a breaking news situation. It was a busy morning, but at the end of the day…VirtualNewsCenter was quick, accurate, and great to work with!

When I first heard the story, I called Scott in the newsroom…within 5 minutes we had a report that we could use to break into our programming and update our listeners. As the news changed and evolved in the morning, the team was happy to update their reports and come on our live shows via telephone.

Bottom line – we sounded credible and on top of this story. VirtualNewsCenter is an amazing product.

For small markets, it only takes a phone call or e-mail to our newsroom, and we do the rest via phone. For truly major events, we can team with a station staffer to professionally present the information as quickly as it happens.

In a larger market where breaking news happens more frequently, we can work with your existing staff to get breaking news on fast. We can also play a role in your team coverage -- enabling you to have even more of your staff on the street, at the event.
